Employment

I like working with Country Connect and with our clients with disability. I enjoy the connection I have with them and being able to have a laugh and share stories

Julieanne, a 28-year-old woman from Ramingining, has always been passionate about community support. After completing Year 12 and studying childcare at Charles Darwin University, she sought work in her community, taking on various roles despite limited options. Before joining Country Connect Foundation, she worked in Youth Sport and Recreation with the East Arnhem Regional Council. However, when Country Connect Foundation expanded its services in Ramingining, Julieanne’s interest was sparked, especially with the return of her kinship brother and sister, Andrew* and Kelly*. Inspired by the possibility of making a meaningful impact, she reached out to explore opportunities with Country Connect Foundation and ultimately transitioned into a Support Worker role.
Now, as Kelly’s* primary cultural support, Julieanne’s presence has been transformative. Her care and insights have strengthened Kelly’s* overall wellbeing, helping her navigate her needs with ease and dignity. Julieanne sees the value of pairing Yolngu participants with Yolngu staff, noting, "Balanda staff often need a translator to truly understand our culture and what the client is communicating.” With her unique perspective, Julieanne bridges these gaps, empowering Kelly* with the freedom to make choices in her daily activities and adapt plans as her needs shift, saying, "It’s the freedom for the client to choose what they want to do, and if something changes, I can understand and work around their needs."
Employing Julieanne within her own community has not only boosted Kelly’s* wellbeing but has also contributed to local economic stability. For Julieanne, this role is not just a job; it’s a meaningful career that aligns with her values, allowing her to acquire new skills and strengthen her future. Her story exemplifies the powerful impact of local employment and culturally aligned care - creating pathways for community empowerment and a legacy of connection and growth.
I didn’t see her for a long time. She was sent to Darwin because there was no one to help her in Ramingining. I was shopping in Darwin when i saw her. We were hugging and crying. When i came back i knew i needed to care for my sister.
